Gary Gygax
Gary Gygax, who died on Tuesday aged 69, invented Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), among the first, and certainly the most influential, of the role-playing games which had their roots in fantasy literature and which, though they often used no more than pencils, paper and dice, had an immense impact on computer gaming.
Indeed, in one poll Gygax tied with JRR Tolkein (in 13th place) for his influence on gaming in general; perhaps less flatteringly, Sync magazine placed him at No 1 on its list of 50 Greatest Nerds of All Time.

D&D sprang from Chainmail, a miniatures wargame which Gygax had devised with Jeff Perren in 1971. By this stage, Gygax's devotion to gaming had led him to organise a convention (there were around a score at the first meeting) in his basement.
But from this start in 1967, he met David Arneson, with whom he was to create D&D, and the meetings developed into GenCon, which now attracts tens of thousands of gamers each year.
Ernest Gary Gygax was born on July 27 1938 in Chicago and was taught to play cards at the age of five, and chess a year later, by his mother.
His father, a German-speaking Swiss immigrant, was an orchestral musician who first encouraged his interest in fantasy and science fiction. L Sprague de Camp, Jack Vance and Robert E Howard (the creator of Conan the Barbarian) were early favourites. By contrast, he "yawned through" Tolkein.
"He certainly assisted in popularising [D&D] because I did put Tolkienesque things in there," Gygax conceded. "I'm not a big Tolkien fan, though. I still don't give a hoot about hobbits."
When Gary was eight the family moved to Lake Geneva, near Milwaukee in Wisconsin, where he spent most of his life. He began to devise games in his teens, ordering hexagram paper from the games company Avalon Hill, but soon began to improvise additional rules, drawing from small plastic models of soldiers.
"I started devising rules where what the plastic figure was wearing was what he had," Gygax told the website GameSpy. "If he had a shield and no armour, then he just has a shield. Shields and half-armour = half-armour rules; full-armour figure = full armour rules."
He also began to make use of polygonic dice, now a common feature of most role-playing games. Young Gary dropped out of high school, but later took a course in Anthropology at the University of Chicago. During the 1960s he made his living as an insurance salesman.
Gygax's first company, Tactical Studies Rules, was set up with Don Kaye. After Kaye's death, Gygax bought out his share, and the company did well from publishing and - eventually - video game, book and film rights, including an animated series of which Gygax was executive producer, until he sold his majority shareholding. The company is now owned by Hasbro, the toy manufacturer.
Gygax left TSR in 1985 and subsequently worked on a huge range of fantasy games and novels, though none was ever as commercially successful as D&D. Amongst other things, he worked out a three-dimensional variant of chess, (English) Civil War games, naval strategy battle games and games based on Alexander the Great, Dunkirk and the Battle of Little Big Horn.
He played himself in guest appearances on several television programmes, including the comedy science-fiction cartoon Futurama, in which he rolled dice before making any statement - "It's a… pleasure to meet you" - and formed (with Stephen Hawking) part of the preposterous "Al Gore Vice-Presidential Action Force".
SFX magazine placed him 37th on its list of influential figures in science fiction, and a strain of bacteria, Arthronema gygaxiana, was named for him
A keen smoker, Gygax was annoyed when, after a stroke in 2004, he had to exchange the packet of Camels he had enjoyed every day for 50 years for cigars.
His first marriage ended in divorce, and he married secondly, in 1987, Gail Carpenter. She survives him, as do three sons and three daughters.
