Canadian Noah Brickley has been making music for almost 10 years: flitting between styles, spheres and contexts, soaking up everything from Van Morrisson to the Boredoms, he now concentrates on hiphop, breaking up the narrowly defined limits of this particular genre.
From the first moment "Quicksand" assaults us with a barrage of musical references and quotes like there's no tomorrow. Dancehall, folk, jazz, indie rock, jungle, industrial... hardly a style is left unexplored. Nevertheless Noah23 never truly leaves the realm of hiphop, but keeps patrolling and searching its frontiers with binoculars, directional microphone and hallucinogenic substances, always aware of what goes on beyond.
It took Noah Brickley four months to record the raps for "Quicksand", to repeatedly discard, pick and hone them until each and every word had found its rightful place. Tightly packed they are declaimed at dizzying speeds in an undulating singsong or tongue twisting staccato flow. "Language is a virus" Noah claims. And if he is right "Quicksand" will prove to be a highly infectious host, filled to the brim with contagious spores just waiting to erupt. "Noah23 is definitely not of this earth. Only someone capable of circular breathing through their skin could rap and sing like this. Nonetheless, a few of his mates do try to keep up. Whereas other emcees have styles or signatures or gimmicks, Noah23 is the first emcee to my knowledge who has had his corpus callosom removed and replaced with an interface connecting his frontal lobe directly into a multi-track and thus his unconscious to the listening world."

"The lyrically inclined will either be delighted or infuriated by Guelph, Ontario's Noah 23. Sharing the stream-of-consciousness inclinations of artists like Anticon's, his flow is a multi-tracked spiel as grabby as a grocery store contest winner with two minutes to fill up his shopping basket."
from The Wire, UK
"Brikley's dizzying verbiage is breathtaking, expanding the boundaries of this insular genre further than the ear can hear."
from Logo magazine, UK
"Gripes? Well, lyrically, unless you're in the mood for a truly mind-expanding trip, this could be completely inaccessible. Musically too, it may upset both avant-garde and hip-hop purists. But maybe a little like George Steiner said about Paul Celan's poetry, you should 'let him enter your life. At risk. Knowing he will change it'. (8 out of 10 points)"
from No Ripcord, UK
"Am Ende gelingt dem kanadischen Naturtalent der Spagat zwischen amerikanisch geprägter HipHop-Düsternis und augenzwinkernder Ironie, die sich musikalisch von den Vorbildern emanzipiert ohne albern zu wirken. Eine erfrischende Sichtweise."
from Frankfurter Rundschau, Germany
"Quicksand ist sowas von erfrischend, daß man es gar nicht wahr haben möchte. Noah23 und auch die anderen aus seinem Umfeld, haben einen völlig eigenen Sound geschaffen. Hier wird keinem Ideal nachgehinkt oder nur ein ausgelutschter Moment geschaffen."
from Punchline, Germany
"Ein kaleidoskopisches Sammelsurium aus Zitaten und Mementos, das intelligent als Hintergrundmusik zum Maschinengewehrrap verwebt wurde. Experimentierfreudig, musikalisch, frisch und unkonventionell, ein wahrer Geniestreich."
from Black, Germany
"Eine weitere wunderbar formatlose HipHopPlatte für den anspruchsvollen Hörer. (5 out of 5 points)"
